After a fierce typhoon, a mysterious gigantic egg washes ashore. The twin fairies of Infant Island plea for the egg's return to Mothra, its rightful owner, but it's too late - greedy promoters have turned it into an amusement park attraction. Meanwhile Godzilla reawakens and tramples across Japan, heading straight for the big egg. Can Mothra save her offspring from Godzilla? Will Japan survive this epic monster battle? Directed by Ishiro Honda, MOTHRA VS. GODZILLA (1964) is widely considered the best of all Godzilla sequels, with an all-star Toho cast and exciting special effects. Classic Media presents the original Japanese-language version with English subtitles in glorious Toho Scope, plus the classic English-dubbed version originally released in the U.S. as GODZILLA VS. THE THING.

1A Kid's review  May 23, 2010
Poor Godzilla. this is a very sad movie because Godzilla didn't win, only Mothra won -how sad- I thought watching Godzilla as he was tumbling down into the water. If you really love Godzilla then don't buy this movie, this movie is only for people who hate Godzilla.

2Godzilla DVD  Mar 23, 2010
The DVD itself was OK (and the movie itself rates five stars), but the case was damaged. Be careful of this seller!

4Good film, fair DVD  Mar 08, 2010
Godzilla films have always had a reputation as being cheap, campy nonsense and are often treated poorly when released on DVD. At least when Classic Media released their new series of Godzilla DVDs they made an effort to treat these films with the respect they deserve but never got.

To start off, Mothra vs. Godzilla is my favourite Godzilla movie, perhaps even better than the original. The special effects are pretty good (keep in mind the film was made in 1964), the story is a fine example of how Toho monster movies of the time set themselves apart from their American counterparts and Akira Ifukube's score is, in my opinion, one of the greatest film scores ever written (up there with the Themes for Star Wars or Star Trek)

The DVD, while much better than previous releases, has some strengths but also some flaws. It's greatest strength is the fact that it marks the first time the original, unedited, undubbed Japanese version was released in North America. The picture quality is pretty good and so is the audio. The subtitles could have been better: one scene the priest prays to the gods to protect the people from any "courses" (I'm sure they mean "curses") but that aside the Japanese version is very good.

Unfortunately if feels like the Japanese version is the only feature Classic Media seems to care about. The edited U.S. version (Godzilla vs. the Thing) is in bad shape, full of scratches, hairs, grain and is cropped to 1.78:1 aspect ratio. After watching the Japanese version in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, watching this version felt like I was watching my old pan and scan VHS copy.

The special features while decent, are somewhat slim. The audio commentary is pretty insightful into the making of the film and it's U.S. release, the Japanese trailer is also in as good a condition as the Japanese version of the film but for some strange reason they didn't add subtitles to it, so unless you can speak and read Japanese you won't understand what's being said or written on screen. Sadly they didn't bother adding the U.S. trailer as a special feature. Personally I think Classic Media thinks we'll just be happy to have the Japanese version of the film; and they're probably right.

Overall, Mothra vs. Godzilla is a good film with a fair DVD release. It could have been better but it's probably the best were going to get.

5The Egg Belongs to Mothra...the MIghty Thing....  Feb 08, 2010
Mothra vs. Godzilla features one of Godzilla's finest screen appearances, with human drama and spectacular monster action coming together to create a near-flawless daikaiju picture. Classic Media presents an excellent DVD release, with both the original Japanese version and the 1964 American International Pictures release (under the original A.I.P. title Godzilla vs. the Thing). This film is one of the few Toho monster fests whose American release version surpasses the original.

This Toho classic depicts Godzilla at his all-time best, featuring one of the most impressive Godzilla suit designs and some of Eiji Tsuburaya's finest special effects work. Virtually every scene featuring Godzilla was composed to be visually spectacular, and the innovative effects work holds up admirably, even after 40+ years. Akira Ifukube composed a memorable score, which perfectly complements the film and establishes motifs that have become synonymous with Godzilla over the years.

While the original Japanese version contains a few minor scenes that aren't present in the American release, it is missing one of the best-realized effects sequences shot for the film--the Frontier missile attack scene. Most likely, this is because the attack is carried out by the U.S. Navy, which, at the time, would have flown in the face of Japanese sensibilities.

The Classic Media DVD is superb, although the aspect ratio of the U.S. version is cropped to be narrower than the original widescreen (due to it otherwise being the best available print, I understand). It's a small issue, so this DVD release receives top recommendation.

3This one is fun  Jan 04, 2010
Wow...I watched the original film "Gojira" about 2 hourse before watching "Mothra vs. Godzilla"...talk about a drastic change in tone! Whereas "Gojira" is a dark tale about the horrors of the nuclear age..."Mothra vs. Godzilla" is simply fun. Sure there is a no-nukes message in "MvG" as well, it's just that the messenger is quite different this time around.

When a huge egg washes up on the beach after a typhoon, some greedy businessman buys the egg from the local villagers, and he plans on making it a huge tourist attraction. Two little trophy top sisters arrive from Infant Island and beg the businessmen to give the egg back as it belongs to Mothra the defender of their island. The singing duo are worried that when the egg hatches the larvae could cause lots of damage. When they are refused the egg, the girls return to their bomb blasted island atop their giant moth friend. Of course, this is when Godzilla decides to attack...and the only hope of stopping him lies with the mini-girls and Mothra.

This is a fun entry in the series. Mothra is a fun adversary, as are the larvae. This movie also features one of the best Godzilla "awakening" moments in the series as he burst out of the ground. The only issue I had with this entry is that Godzilla comes off as a clumsy oaf at times. The damage Godzilla causes seems to be almost accidental, at one point getting his tail caught in a large tower, pulling the structure down trying to free himself and then running into some buildings because of it. At another time, he's walking along and trips falling into a castle and clawing it apart as he tries to maintain his balance. Even in his showdown with Mothra the big guy trips and falls down a hill?

The battles are fun, and tons of miniature tanks, buildings, bridges etc. get torn up in the process, so what else could you ask for. Not the best in the series, but far from the worst.
