4A great set, but could be frustrating for youngsters.  Aug 12, 2008
As an adult collector, this is my favorite set so far - but there were some strange design choices. Building it was much trickier and more delicate than any set I can remember, so if you're buying it for someone under 10 make sure an adult is there to help them out. One disappointing thing I've never seen before was sloppy directions: pieces appearing out of nowhere in one step that are added in the next, additions to the back of the model where you can't see exactly where to place the pieces, and there was even an extra page stuck in the box with a revision to one of the steps. I managed to get it all together, but younger folks will probably throw this set through the window in frustration at the poor directions.

There are a few places where parts can be easily broken off or the gears can jam up while playing with it as well. As a result I would think this is more aimed at the adults - but in that case, why did they load it up with cool kid-stuff like shooting cannons, dropping bombs, etc? It sort of strikes a balance between realistic collector's set and kids' play toy, but doesn't really hit either mark.

That said, even for all its warts it's a fantastic set when finally built. The gearing for the wings is a thing of beauty, and many of the pieces are generic enough that you can build plenty of new creations out of this set.

One minor thing I don't understand is why they left the top doors for the crew compartment separate - they could have joined them together on each side with one more piece and made the whole model much more sturdy. As it is all six pieces flop about individually. It's really odd.

5Good buy!  Jun 04, 2008
I'm 10 years old. It's a little tricky to build. I wouldn't recommend it for littler kids. It was a bit hard for me to build, but I was able to do it by myself. The capes are hard to put on the Storm Troopers. It's really fun to play with now that it's built.

4whatch the gears!!!!!!!!!!!!  May 27, 2008
when I started building this set I missed three steps: one was conecting the bombs together, second was forgetting the most critical gear, third was missing something on the wing. also today I found that where the gears attatch to the thrusters wouldn't attatch, but I fixed it easily.

I actually took out almost all the midlle, and remodeled it making the Imperial Shuttle!!!!!!!!!!

Overall pretty good, nice rare commander minifigs!

5Christmas gift for my son  Jan 12, 2008
This was one of the few things my 12 yr old son asked for. He has thoroughly enjoyed setting it up and playing strategy games with it and his other legos. He loves working with his hands and it keeps him away from the video games.

5Awesome Kit  Jan 08, 2008
My son received this as a Christmas present. It is his first regular lego kit. Up until now he has been using the larger blocks.

We had a great time putting it together. It is a little tricky and I ended up doing a lot of the work. He is 4 and it was still a little difficult for him to be patient and work through the instructions.

As we finished each component he got more and more excited. When it was done he just loved it. Of course it wasn't long before he started 'breaking' it. I put it together a few times, then we just tore it apart.

Then we started the real fun of creating our own ships and other things. His birthday isn't far away and he is already asking for more lego kits. This is a really great toy.

Oh - and I rated this well on education too because it involves some really cool stuff with gears and levers. We took the time to look at how it went together and why it worked. Very neat stuff. Even with all the pieces lego didn't have when I was a kid and the movie theme, this is still great for creative play.
