A hero with a personality, yes Aug 16, 2010 There's been quite a few comic book adaptations being done, although that I haven't read any of the comics before watching the movies. Though that of the ones that I've seen some seem to be alright, good, and some I think are great without having any of the comics to know anything about the stuff prior to watching the movie. While I have to say that some comic based movies like Spider Man, or even X-Men, I've come to enjoy watching them, then when I went about watching Hellboy, I found another one that I can go about enjoy watching without reading the comic. I have to say that this movie reminds me of how the Spider Man movies were approached, but this movie feels darker than that of those movies and the writing seems to be just on par with those movies, maybe even better.
When it comes to the use of CGI, in movies, there are some that I seen that know how to use it properly while others it don't turn out so good. With Hellboy, they knew how to make good use of it and turns out rather good in the end. As for the acting in the movie I felt that each of the actors done everything to give their characters the feel that they are in the comics. With the 3-Disc set, I like all the special features that have been packed in this set, everything from the trailers & tv spots to even about a 2 ½ hour documentary on how the movie went about from the comics to the big screen. Seeing that, I never realized how much stuff went about in the making of this movie and know that these movies aren't easy to make. Overall I give it 5 stars out of 5.
Hellboy DVD Jul 01, 2010 I received my 2-disc DVD set in less than a week. Condition was almost new. My daughter loves the movie and watches it a few times a week. We've had no problems with the DVD. I am extremely happy with my purchase and will do business with this seller on my next DVD search.
Hellboy May 25, 2010 This movie is awesome. i love this film and it's on a directors cut specail three disc edtion. can't get any better than this. Ron pearlman is perfect for this part as hellboy. This movie rocks. If you have not seen this movie then you should
A hero is only as effective as the villain. May 23, 2010 Hellboy is a well directed and visually impressive film. My problems with it lie in the antagonist. He just isn't interesting. He is evil for the pure sake of being evil. Most of the creatures that Hellboy battles with are strange looking octopus creatures. It's hard to connect to the battles when the enemies just aren't engaging enough. They seem like rejects from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. And the final battle consists of Hellboy fighting a large cgi octopus. The best villains are those that don't believe they are evil but feel that they are justified in their actions. They also need to be organic in my opinion. The sequel, The Golden Army is much better in that the villain feels his actions are for the benefit of the world that he occupies. Hellboy is a decent movie, but for me personally, it doesn't hold up to repeat viewings.
Disappointing May 05, 2010 I loved Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth and heard he was going to be directing the new Hobbit movie, so I thought I'd check out Hellboy. Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed. I generally like films like X-Men Trilogy (X-Men/ X2 - X-Men United/ X-Men - The Last Stand), and superficially this movie was like those - the freaky superheros, the deranged villains. Visually, this is a strong movie and I can see del Toro's hand in creating a dark, visually arresting film.
However, the plot and the acting were lousy and cliche. Unlike in a film like X-Men, with the subtle and charismatic Magneto, the villains in Hellboy were a clownish Nazi and, I kid you not, Rasputin the Russian monk. Hellboy himself, played by Ron Perlman, was hard to take seriously. He acts too much like he wants to be tough, but comes across as trying too hard.
The story involved secret gates to hell which led to things that looked more like aliens than demons. There are also tons of lose threads - is it really likely that all of the hell hounds were located in one place? If the monster at the end was a "god," as Rasputin says, why was it so easy to kill?
I really wanted to like this movie, but just couldn't. At least the fish guy was pretty cool.
